Campaign and Living History
Campaign and Living History is a core aspect of Platform Southall’s work, dedicated to preserving the historical struggles, activism, and contributions of South Asian communities in Southall. This initiative sheds light on pivotal moments in the area’s history, including the fight against racial discrimination, workers’ rights movements, and community solidarity efforts that have shaped the identity of Southall today. Through storytelling, exhibitions, and educational resources, the project ensures that these critical histories remain accessible to future generations.
The campaigning history of Southall is deeply rooted in activism against racial injustice. From the resistance against discriminatory policies in the 1960s and 70s to the protests following incidents of racial violence, Southall has been at the forefront of British anti-racism movements. Key events, such as the response to the 1979 Southall Uprising after the killing of Blair Peach, serve as reminders of the community’s resilience and determination to fight for equality. By archiving these movements and sharing the voices of those who lived through them, Platform Southall keeps these narratives alive, ensuring they continue to inspire present and future activism.
The Living History aspect of the initiative goes beyond political struggles to document the everyday lives, traditions, and experiences of South Asian communities in Southall. Oral histories, personal stories, and archival material bring to life the journeys of migrants, their cultural adaptations, and the ways in which they built a thriving community in the UK. By capturing these lived experiences, the project provides an authentic and deeply personal perspective on Southall’s transformation over the decades.
Through these efforts, Campaign and Living History not only honors the past but also informs the present. By recognizing the struggles and triumphs of previous generations, the initiative fosters a sense of pride, awareness, and empowerment within the community today. It serves as a bridge between history and contemporary issues, ensuring that the lessons of the past continue to shape a more inclusive and just future.
